After twenty years using skid steer loaders of
a different make, Gerry Mifsud from Gerry’s
Excavations has jumped ship and now sports a blue
Toyota “Huski’ skid steer loader jersey.
And he couldn’t be happier with his new Huskies.
He purchased his latest skid steer loaders through Toyota
Material Handling in Sydney.
Rep Glen Ryan knew exactly how to update Gerry’s fleet and
knew the Huski came equipped with everything he needed.
“Straight away I realised that that the Huski was exactly what I
was looking for. It really hit the spot,” Gerry says.
So far he has absolutely loved working with Toyota Material
Handling and loves the new Huskies.
At this point they only have about 500 hours on them and he
says that the backup service has been incredible.
“If I have even needed anything they have been straight onto
it,” he said.
His first machine is a 2012 model.
“It had been sitting in the yard for a while when I bought it,
but I was able to cut a good deal being that it was badged the
previous years’ build,” he explained.
“As it had been sitting around though, I found when I first got
it that it had a flat battery. But when I called Toyota to let them
know they had a brand new battery there for me within an hour
and a half.”
Both of the machines are Huski -9s and the size of them was a
really big factor for Gerry.
“I didn’t want anything that was too big,” he said.
“Occasionally you do get a bigger job, where you are loading
a truck and dog all day and a bigger machine would work, but
90 percent of my work is around housing and narrow sites and
nimble sorts of jobs,” he said.
Gerry said he purchased two machines for a number of reasons.
“Firstly, I was able to get a really good deal,” he said, laughing.
“Secondly, it gives me the option of putting another operator
on a job if it is ever required.
“I always have a spare machine and it allows me to restrict
any downtime for any reason and it also allows me to operate
newer machines, which keeps me more efficient at work.”
In regards to attachments, he has a set of forks that he can
use to move bricks when required and an auger that he very
occasionally does the odd job with for fences.
But his main setup is the tipper and the extend trailer so that
he can bring two machines to the site.
“My two newest machines both have Norm buckets as my
machines’ applications are largely reliant on a four-in -one
bucket,” he explained.
“It is important that I have the best.”

Toyota maintains
forklift market
leadership
Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has
retained overall national forklift market leadership
for the fifth consecutive year.
It extended its uninterrupted dominance of the internal-
combustion counter-balance forklift market to 27 years,
achieving a 30.1 per cent market share.
Official Australian Industrial Truck Association (AITA)
industry sales results just released for 2013 showTMHA
delivered in excess of 4,700 forklifts in 2013, a total market
share of 28.6 per cent.
This was over 300 forklifts ahead of Toyota’s nearest rival.
Battery-electric forklifts accounted for 54.4 per cent of
Toyota forklift deliveries.
On a State by State basis, Toyota was number one in
forklifts in New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania
and Western Australia.
TMHA executive vice president and COO, Steve Takacs,
said the company would build on its 2013 results with the
launch of a new product in the first quarter of this year.
“Toyota’s continued market leadership confirms the
company’s trusted name in forklift trucks, product quality
and customer support,” he said.
“It also highlights the depth and breadth of the TMHA
range of Toyota, BT and Raymond-branded forklifts in
meeting the needs of counter-balance and warehouse
material-handling equipment buyers.
“The new product we are launching this year is the fruit
of Toyota’s unequalled investment in forklift research and
development.”

Toyota Genuine forklift parts have topped a
major annual survey of North American materials
handling industry decision-makers in all four
categories surveyed.
The 2013 Lift Truck Parts Study by the Peerless Research
Group rated Toyota Genuine Parts highest in terms of
reliability, durability, quality and as the best value for money.
Peerless Research Group is a division of Peerless Media,
which produces industry-leading publications and websites,
including Modern Materials Handling, Logistics Management,
Supply Chain Management Review and Material Handling
Product News for the supply chain, logistics and materials
handling markets.
The Lift Parts Study gauges what material handling
professionals consider as the most important attributes for
forklift truck parts purchases and which brands of forklift
truck accessories lead in these key areas.
Toyota Material Handling Australia executive vice president
and COO Steve Takacs said the Peerless survey was further
proof of Toyota’s worldwide commitment to quality, durability
and reliability in its industrial equipment.
“Toyota parts have built a reputation for their high level of
quality and durability,” he said.
“This survey validates the company’s commitment
to delivering the highest calibre of genuine parts and
accessories to help our customers’ forklifts operate at
optimal performance and maximise their investment.”
The Peerless study collected responses from more than
300 industry decision-makers, readers of Modern Materials
Handling magazine, involved in the purchasing of material
handling equipment, products, technologies and services.
The majority of those surveyed are plant managers,
distribution centre and warehouse managers, and corporate
managers within manufacturing and distribution facilities
across a wide range of businesses and industries, including
automotive, food and beverage, machinery and wholesale
trade.
Respondents’ comments regarding Toyota forklift truck parts
included: “Our Toyota never has downtime, it just keeps on
going.” “While being in business with Toyota the majority
of our lives, our repairs have decreased and our operator

overall package, from ordering to delivery to installation to
longevity.”

Qantas Freight
EmbracesToyota
Forklift Service App
A major freight operation has embracedToyota
Material Handling Australia’s (TMHA) new
smartphone service application.
Qantas Freight’s Melbourne domestic terminal at
Tullamarine is the largest national user of the app which
was launched in December 2013.
It uses the smartphone technology to ensure its fleet
of 19 rented Toyota forklifts and towing tractors provide
maximum uptime and productivity.
Qantas Freight Enterprises Training and Equipment
Manager (Melbourne) James Carr said he uses the new
app constantly.
“I’ve found the app quite simple to use,” he said.
“There are only four steps to complete and a service
request is logged.
“Our business is a 24-hour operation, with overnight
being the busiest period, so I’m able to log any overnight
problems when I start work at 6am – and any dayshift
problems the moment they occur,” he said.
“The service team is usually on site in the morning, and
if there is a hold-up or issue I will receive a call from the
service controller.
“Alternatively, if I have an urgent request I’ll follow up
with the service controller.”
The TMH fleet at Qantas Freight in Melbourne includes
six forklifts, four towing tugs, four compact towing
tractors and five BT lift trucks.
TMHA designed the smartphone service app to enable
faster and easier logging of service requests.
It directs service requests by email straight to the
nearest TMH branch for follow up and action. .
Customers can even include a photograph of the unit or
item that requires service.
Once registered, users follow a straightforward
procedure to log a service with four sections – forklift
information, service required, request details and upload
photo (if required).
TMHA General Manager, Service, Stephen Barnes,
said customers appreciate being able to log service
breakdowns on their mobile telephone touch screen.
Customers can log faults by brand, type of forklift used
and type of fault,” he said.
“This means the service technician arrives at the
customer’s premises forearmed with this information
and be better equipped to diagnose and fix the problem.
“TMHA sees this app providing quicker logging of
service requests and further raising Toyota’s industry
leading customer service standards.”
An Android version of the app is now available for non-
iPhone users.
